SubjectRegarding Web Browsers
Date6 October 2005 22:12
Respected Sir,

A few days ago I was searching websites to choose a
topic for my science fair project. I came across your
site and I found the 'Browsers Speed Comparison' very
interesting. I have decided to research on this very
topic for my science fair. Currently I am only testing
Browsers for Windows since I cannot afford Linux or
Mac. Keeping in mind that these days people bend alot
towards Firefox, I have decided to keep everything
unbiased. I am not a fanatic of Firefox but I do
admire some of its qualities. After reading your
article, I downloaded Opera and it was very fast, I
have learnt much from your article.

Currenly I have 4 browsers for my experiment:

Internet Explorer 6.0
Opera 8.2
Firefox 1.0.7
Netscape 8.0

I still can't figure out which shohuld be my 5th
browser. Any help regarding this topic will be
appreciated.

Currently I am only testing these attributes to check
which browser is the best:

Download speed
Warm start and Cold start
Default settings(for users who do not know much about
computers)
Loading page speed

Any help with the attributes will be greatly
appreciated.

I hope you can help me out and just provide me with
anything you can. Also, I was wondering if you had any
other contacts in midn that would be more than willing
to help me out also.

Well, Thank you in advance for your time and
consideration as I will be waiting to hear back from
you.

I would recommend Opera 8.5 - the ad-free version

well, there are 4 main rendering engines in use by Windows browsers; Presto,
Trident (MSHTML), and Gecko.

Presto is Opera's engine.
IE uses Trident.
Firefox and Netscape use Gecko.

Since you cannot get another browser using Presto, I suggest you try one
that uses Trident. Maxthon would be a good example.

Personally, I find that to be incomplete. Think about how you use a browser;
Open it once
Maybe load 20 pages (of which 18 or so use scripting, 15 use CSS, 8 or 9 use
lots of tables)
Maybe go back and forward in history 10 or 15 pages

To get a good range, you should test all of those things. Cold and warm
starts have almost no bearing on overall browsing speed, because you only do
them once or twice per session (in my experience, IE users tend to close IE
more often, but not enough to make much of a difference). History speed is
far more influential than start time.

In any case, make sure that you do not allow slow servers to sway your
results. Use a local dedicated server. You may also want to test various
connection speeds.
