I agree, my site is aimed at programmers, and does contain a lot of
reference material that is unnecessary for learning the basics of
JavaScript.

Unfortunately, many beginners' tutorials start by teaching very bad
practices (most of the tutorials on the web date back to the days of the
browser wars, and so contain badly outdated material). Often, these begin
with the badly abused technique of browser sniffing. As a result, I can
only recommend one tutorial to you:
http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp
This tutorial introduces you to the basics of what JavaScript should look
like, and how to begin using it to write programs. It does also go into
some depth, but does not completely cover how to avoid the major browser
incompatibilities, which are one of the most important parts of real web
JavaScripts.

If you find my tutorial too complex or advanced, I suggest is that you use
that W3Schools tutorial to learn the basics, then once you are comfortable
with the language, use my tutorial to learn how to use the language to
perform real tasks on real web pages.

Hope you find this useful
