SubjectTip regarding Pocket IE rendering of handheld styles
Date19 January 2007 02:09
Hi:

I just discovered your site. Thank you for the excellent information on
Opera's rendering modes. I use Opera 8.6 on an iPAQ 4700 with the VGA
screen, and I was always curious as to why it didn't seem to respect
"media=handheld" style sheets. The answer: Medium-Screen Rendering! Mystery
solved!

I also enjoyed your side-by-side comparison of the various mobile browsers
and how they render different sites. Regarding the behavior of Pocket
Internet Explorer, I recall reading somewhere that PIE actually DOES
correctly render handheld styles, but that there is a bug which prevents it
from working most of the time. Apparently, if you specify the attribute as
"media=Screen" (notice the non-validating capital-S) then PIE will correctly
ignore the screen styles and use only the handheld styles, while the desktop
version of IE will still use the screen styles. I haven't tried this myself,
but since you seem interested in the subject, I thought you might like to
give it a try.

If you're interested in something else to write about, I would appreciate a
page which details the contents of the Opera configuration files opera.ini
and input.ini, or whatever their names are.

Oh, and if you happen know the right people to talk to, would you please
send a note requesting that they hurry up with the WM5 smartphone version of
Opera. I'm about to buy a Samsung Blackjack (i607) phone, and the lack of a
suitable version of Opera for it is a major stumbling block.

Thanks again for your wonderful site.

Regards,

Scott,

The problems with PIE relate to is mis-handling of @media blocks inside
normal stylesheets, and its simultaneous application of two media types. It
can render the styles together, but you have to be very careful about what
you actually give it in order to make it work properly. I have more
information on that here:

Opera have a document about the main opera[6].ini file, where most settings
are stored:

There are also more documents contributed by users on the Opera wiki:

I know Opera are planning to have something out in the market soon, and if
it is anything like the pocket PC release, it should be very good. But note
that this is my personal email account, and I prefer to keep it separate
from official Opera business. If you need more information about the Opera
releases, please use the Opera contact information:
