Hi there,

Will your code work with Netscape 8 and Opera 8?

It doesn't appear that these browsers work correctly with resizeTo().

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

The script works perfectly in Opera 8 (after all, I am an Opera user
myself). The resize function works correctly in Opera 8, assuming that the
window is not maximised, and does not open maximised (in other words, either
height or width should be specified when opening the window - the perfect
popups script uses this). I do disable the window centering part of the
script in Opera, since it cannot take Opera's MDI into account.

As for Netscape 8, to be brutally honest, I really don't care. If anyone
wants to use that miserable excuse for a browser, that is their problem. Why
anyone would want to use it is beyond me. A bloated, ugly version of
Firefox, that manages to be far slower, and filled with nagging,
distracting, AOL propaganda, and with IE's engine put in it. What is the
point in using a Firefox browser when all you are going to do is put IE's
security holes and standards problems into it?!!

Anyway, it works properly in the real Firefox, as in default Firefox setups,
it uses a popup window (which can resize properly, unlike a tabbed window).
I assume Netscape 8 is based on the same principal. If it isn't then it
won't work in Netscape 8. You can always download the browsers and test for
yourself ... both of them are free.

I have support information included on
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/jslibs/script-perfectpopups
This covers the main versions of the browsers, not all the various clones
(after all, there are many, many browsers based on Gecko, and I cannot test
all of them).

Hi Tarquin,

Thank you for the very descriptive explanation!

Yeah, I know Netscape 8 sucks big time (and I don't use it myself), but
unfortunately the site that I would like to use your code on lists
Netscape 8 as a supported browser, so my hands are tied.

Nevertheless, I will be sure to credit you if I do use your code.

Thanks again,
Tom

Hi Tarquin,

Do you know how to get rid of the Firefox statusbar in the popup
window? I tried adding status=0 to the window.open function but the
statusbar is still showing up in Firefox.

I just noticed the following problem with
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/emails/resizeWin.html: if the table
doesn't have the border attribute, or if it's set to border=0, the
popup window will display scrollbars in Firefox :( . You may want to
point that out on your site.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

This is a "security feature" in Firefox. It will not allow you to remove
the status bar. Make the window small enough and it will clip it though ;)
- that effect causes real problems for my script if there is too little
content in the window, and there is nothing I can do about it.

eew. nice bug. Thanks for the info, I will include a note about it.
